Q EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITY #2USING SIGNATURE STRENGTHS IN NEW WAYS Adapted from Peterson (2006) by Michael Steger Signature strengths are strengths of character that a person owns, celebrates, and frequently exercises (Peterson, 2006). This experiential activity helps you to creatively extend your use of your signature strengths in your everyday life. INSTRUCTIONS First, read the “Using Signature Strengths in New Ways Download Using Signature Strengths in New Ways” handout. Based on your results from the VIA Survey of Character Strengths and discussion in class, choose one signature strength you would like to practice using in different ways. For one week, take a challenge to use the chosen signature strength in a new way every day. You can use some of the suggestions to use signature strengths in new ways outlined in the document, but also come up with some new ways your own. Keep a daily log of how you used your strength in a new way to assist your writing about your experience later in your reflection paper. After you have completed this activity for one week, respond to the following questions on your reflection paper: 1. Which signature strengths did you choose for this activity? Why? How did you use your signature strength differently every day? 2. How was your experience in trying to use your signature strength in a different way every day? Was it easy or difficult? What aspect of the exercise was easy or difficult? 3. How useful did you find using your signature strength in a different way every day? Was a certain way more effective than the other? If so, why? 4. What are some other contexts would you like to try using your future signature strength in the future? 5. What other signature strengths would you like to try this exercise with? How would you use them differently? 6. How would you evaluate this experiential activity? Was it helpful? What did you like about the activity? If you would you like to change something about this activity, what would it be? 7. What have you learned from this experiential activity that you did not know beforehand?
